John Rham
Overall US Open - 5 events 3 cuts made
Best Finish - 3rd 🥉 2019
2021 Form - 7 top 10s from 12 events
Overview - The US Open is renowned for being the toughest of tests. Despite being in excellent form and running away from the field at The Memorial before being forever to withdraw one thing that concerns me, Rham’s wins have come at scores of -13, -22, -26, -9, -4 the winning score next week won’t be in the double-digit brackets. Rhams doesn’t have the most discipline and his attacking style of play albeit incredible to watch doesn’t stand out to me as the perfect fit for winning a US Open. The slight thing in his favour he plays Tory South very well and on a track that’s long that require world-class off the tee game he’s sure to go close. Will he get his first major under his belt at the US Open, not for me. He will go off the favourite and rightly so as the others at the top of the market have lots more negatives against their name than John.
DJ
Overall US Open - 13 events 11 cuts made
Best Finish - 1st 🥇 2016 - 6 tops 10’s
2021 Form - 2 top 10s from 10 events
Overview - After his win, 🏆 early February over in Saudi on a wind-exposed links track I was really keen on DJ for this US Open at Torrey, a brute of a course that demands a world-class driving game he was one I wanted to start building my back roll on. However he soon started missing it left and right off the tee box, he started to withdraw from events and his game has been ever so inconsistent over the 4 months. I’m not saying DJ can’t bounce back to form he’s a world-class player, but it would take a leap of faith to back him right now. I’m writing this prior to the Micky a mouse event on the PGA Tour this week so if he runs away from the field and leads them a merry dance I’ll be considering him, that’s a big if though! For now, he’s not in the portfolio.
Brooksey
Overall US Open - 7 events 6 cuts made 4 top 10’s
Best Finish - 1st🥇2017 & 2018
2021 Form - 3 top 10s from 8 events
Overview - Well, despite 4 majors in the bag 💼 , I hope Bryson can go back to back and match Brooks in US Open wins, I hope he surpasses his major wins of 4 but I’m saying this more in hope than expectation. Bryson does all he can to better himself and his game yet gets a lot of unfair stick because he’s different. In the words of Kevin Keegan " I would love if Bryson was to take him down in final pairing showdown’ anyway rant over onto his chances. Brooksey will be raring to go, the knee will have been rested and he will use the event this week to get his game in tip-top shape. If he shows signs of driving the ball well and hitting his irons good, it will spell danger for the rest of the field.
His Major record is second to none. In this weeks field, his mentality world-class at this stage he would hard to pass over if returning with some form this week. I dislike Brooks but I’m not stupid enough to overlook him in this event. From the top 5 in the betting market, he is the one I would want to lay. With a good result this week he will challenge Rham for favouritism and let’s talk some facts. 1 is 4-time big boy Major champ winning on big boys courses and the other isn’t even a Major champ yet. He’s not proven it down the stretch when it really matters, putting on an exhibition in the Irish open isn’t the same as doing it Major. Brooksey is a live chance for sure!
Jordan Speith
Overall US Open - 9 events 6 cuts made 1 top 10
Best Finish - 🥇1st 2015
2021 Form - 8 top 10s from 13 events
Overview - from his 12 PGA Tour wins only 2 of those came with the winning score in single digits under par, Jordan despite his reputation of loving tough test really enjoys birdie barrage and of all the majors this is one I feel is hard for him to win again. US Opens are won from fairways not from where the fans stand and despite the recent win, I wouldn’t touch Jordan with free bets this week. I will be laying him top 10, top20 missed the cut the lot. His 2021 form is pretty spectacular in terms of consistency however he should have got the job done on 3 occasions, not just the 1. His approach play has dropped off significantly since early 2021 however his driving has been more consistent of late which will help his chances for his backers and fans this week.
Rory
Overall US Open - 12 events 7 cuts made
Best Finish - 1st 🥇2011
2021 Form - 4 top 10s from 12 events 1 win
Overview 19 PGA tours win 4 majors not one of those wins came at a winning score in single digits under par. Quite simply when the going gets tough, Rory doesn’t get going! He did win this event on a rain soften course in 2011 peak Rory no scar tissue at the time but it’s 2014 when he last won a major that 7 years now and 26 attempts.
That said I like quite a lot about the Rory game and the test ahead this week given the premium I’m placing on the off the tee game, total driving. Rory is a top 5 Driver of the ball in the world and when he is flowing it’s a joy to watch. The course is long and demand a great T2G game. Looking at Rory’s stats he has gained strokes vs the field in all but one event in 2021 from both the tee box and on approach play. I’m usually quick to dismiss Rory but for some reason, that’s not as easy for this US Open. If you are a fan I wouldn’t laugh at you for placing each way bet at 16/1 plus with 10places available.
JT
Overall US Open - 6 events 4 cuts made 2 top 10’s
Best Finish - 8th 2020
2021 Form - 2 top 10s from 13 events 1 win
OverviewOverview - JT seems a little frustrated with his game right now and that’s because his putting very inconsistent, losing strokes vs the field in 5 events from 13 events, his iron play which is the cornerstone of his game has been below par since winning the players championship and his driving has also been inconsistent. Not the recipe for a US Open win. I expect JT to win 4/5/6 majors during his career but I can’t see him adding to the tally of 1 this week. Too many parts of his game falling short of the standards needed. Like Jordan, he is one I’ll be looking to play against next week 3 balls, tops 10 markets etc. 105 the in SG putting on Poa green doesn’t bode well for JT given his form with the flat stick
BDC
Overall US Open - 6events 4 cuts made
Best Finish - 1st 🥇2020 6 stroke winner
2021 Form - 4 top 10s from 12 events 1 win
Overview- I would love to see Bryson win this week and shove it in Brooksey face, and despite the lack of course form, I’m not dismissing him. He is gaining stokes vs the field off the tee in every event he plays he is gaining strokes with the approach in 10 of 12 events this year he short game is underrated, he is gaining stokes in 5 of his last 6 events. He has a win at the event last year and has proved he can get it done not something the favourite Rham can’t say. His win was also a low single-digit win where he was the only player to finish under par these things can’t be said Rham and Rory. Mentally Strong 💪 is Bryson and I quite like his game for next weeks test he is has a far better chance than Rory, JT & Speith for me and 16-18/1 with 10 places he is firmly on my radar.
Colin Morikawa
Overall US Open - 2events 1 cuts made
Best Finish - 35th 2019
2021 Form - 6 top 10s from 12 events 1 win
Overview - what a season he has so far 6 top 10’s from 12 goes and 1 victory. He could have easily has a second just recently but was pipped by a back to form Patrick Cantley. Will Collin end his career with a US Open win to his name, yes, is my view for sure. Will that win be this week at TORREY, no, not for me at all. He most certainly has the skillset and temperament to win 3/4/5 majors but not this one for me. He will be on my radar for all majors and especially those with a premium on driving accuracy as well as approach play. He doesn’t have much form at TORREY to give me confidence this week. For sure he will have his backers given his excellent season so far. The backbone of his game is the elite approach play and iron play the BEST IN THE WORLD BY SOME DISTANCE! however, TORREY south is more about off the tee and around the green than approach play according to the data and I see no reason for that to change too much this week. Better suited majors test lie ahead for Colin, and I hope to be on board when he does get major number 2. 97th In SG putting on Poa green isn’t something that shouts back me and putting will be a key factor this week. Many players are not keen on the POA.
Patrick Cantley.
Overall US Open - 5 events 5 cuts made
Best Finish - 21st 2019
2021 Form 3 top 10s from 11 events 1 🏆
Overview - 4 missed cuts in a row his worse run since turning pro was followed by a 23rd and then the elusive win came 2 weeks back where he battled back down the stretch to beat Collin Morikawa, we must remember Rambo was 6 clear before being forced to pull out of the event with 1 round to go. I’m a massive fan of Pat’s his game stacks up really well for the est ahead this week, it’s a little annoying his win came so close to this event as I would be wanting 33/1 at least with 8/9 places. 25/1 is rather short for a player with the best finish of tied 21st from 5 attempts at the US Open. DD is huge here at TORREY and Pat don’t lack in that area at all. It’s his putting and short game that concerns me slightly. He does however have a win at a winning score of -9 and that’s an angle I like t his week. I want proof my player can handle the grind.
Viktor Hovland
Overall US Open - 2events 2 cuts made
Best Finish - 12th 2019
2021 Form 6 top 10s from 13 events
overview - Tied 12th and the low amateur on debut in 2018 Hovland hasn’t looked back since. His game is in tip-top shape With only one missed cut from 13 events in 2021. He has yet to get the elusive win but his performances have been so consistent and it’s a winner waiting to happen. Despite the lack of short game and putting concerns, I have a strong feeling that Victor will go well this week. His 2 PGA TOUR wins so far came at scores of 20 under par and that’s not going to be the case this week, with some players, this puts me off it doesn’t with Viktor I like the maturity and temperament he has for a man of such a young age. My final pics for the week have yet to be decided, but those looking to place an early wager then look no further than this guy at the top of the board. I predict Hovland will win a major by three or four strokes at some point in his career maybe, even more, he has a gear which on a handful of players in the game have DJ JT Rory and Brooks. A bold statement but this guy has the game to complete the Grand Slam of majors and I say that with zero in the bag so far that’s how highly I rate him. The dedication he showed to improving his short game over the past 12 months is remarkable. Unlike many players, when spending so much time improving one area, he hasn’t lost any of his skills in his approach play and driving game, which is an elite standard. A major we’re waiting to happen we might not have to wait too long.
Patrick Reed
Overall US Open - 7 events 6 cuts made 1 top 10
Best Finish - 4th 2018
2021 Form - 5 top 10s from 14 events
Overview - Patrick is a serious contented for me next week at Torrey Pines. He has 4 top 20’s at the US Open from 7 goes. His game is solid of late with 2 tops 10’s in his last 4 events. His short game is world-class and that will go a long way next week at Torrey. He is the 4th best putter in the world over the last 50 rounds on Poa greens and that again will go a long way next week. There is plenty in his favour not to mention he is a major winner already and would love to add to his tally.
