Event Overview
The Plantation Course at Kapalua is a stunning piece of property on the coast of Maui, Hawaii, and possibly the most magnificent resort golfers and their families have the opportunity to stay at for the whole year — a perfect reward to offer all TOUR champions from the previous season.
Some players will be eager to square off against the finest players in the world and add another win to their mantel versus a short field, while others will be motivated to ease into the 2022 year after the holidays.
The fairways and greens complexes are both long, with dramatic elevation changes and severe undulations. These are some of the softest fairways and greens on the TOUR, making this a true birdie situation for the greatest iron players, birdie-makers, and hot putters. Players will benefit from their distance this week, as they will be able to swing freely on the open fairways with little resistance from the few hazards on the course. Distance is certainly a factor this week, however due to the altitude and how far the ball travels player will face plenty of shots with wedge in hand which for a par 73 with only four par 5’s is rare. Don’t be shy to consider those players who excel around green from 75 yards in.
The Plantation Course at Kapalua is 7,596 yards long, making it one of the longest on the PGA TOUR schedule; nevertheless, that length is misleading for several reasons. For starters, it's the only Par-73 on the TOUR, with only three Par-3s, 11 Par-4s, and four Par-5s. The iconic 18th hole, for example, is listed at 677 yards, but given the downhill tee shot and downhill approach from fairway to green, anyone with plus distance can easily reach it in two.
This is one of the easiest tracks the players will face all year, and for the worlds best who all have a win in the last 12 months, expect a winning score of 20under par or better.

5 Key Skill Sets Required
Birdie or better % - With the winning score being circa 20 under par, it goes without saying that making birdies, and plenty of them is the order of the day. Player who are striking it well and more importantly converting those birdie opportunities have an outstanding chance of success this week.
SG Approach - When we looked at the recent winners and the stats it is apparent that SG approach is a key metric. You will need to have plenty of birdie looks this week if you wish to take home the trophy. One way to ensure that is to hit plenty of shots close to the flag stick. This has been the most important factor in contending at this event in recent time.
SG 75-100 yards- Given the fact is playing at altitude this week Even the shortest hitters will be 300 yards plus off the tee box. Plenty of the par four holes are circa 400-450 yards and therefore we will see plenty of shots from 75 yards to 100 yards this isn’t the norm on a part 73 7500 yard plus golf course. I want players on my side who can excel without wedges in hand as well as move it off the tee box
Par 5 Scoring - Given we have four Par 5’s on the course this week, we should pay particular attention to this stat, 3 of the Par 5 are 550 yards are shorter so will be reachable for all players in the field . Winners of this event in the past have scored very well on the Par 5’s. This week will be no different and the player who lifts the the trophy will have excelled in this area.
SG Putting on Bermudagrass - When we face low scoring contests like we will this week, putting will always be a factor. Last years winner isn’t renowned for being the best with the flat stick so albeit important this isn’t to say your player must be a world class putter. If your struggling to fine tune your final selections it’s a area I would use to narrow down the field.JT another who goes real well here isn’t renowned for his putting but it’s certainly and added benefit.
